Services and Programs
The Krewe is classified as a Sec. 509(a)(2) public charity under the internal revenue code, meaning that we are a 501(c)(3) charity whose programs are supported by donations from the general public. Contributions to the Krewe are tax deductable. We are an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff. You can find copies of the Krewe's IRS form 990 on line at www.guidestar.org.
Krewe's primary programs are:
(1) to present theatrical and educational programs concerning Mardi Gras and carnival to a community that would not otherwise have access to them, and
(2) to raise and distribute funds to local 501(c)(3) charities.
Our major theatrical presentation is the Mardi Gras ball. Ours is classified as a "tableau" ball, meaning members present elaborate costumes based on a common theme. The gallery section of this website contains numerous pictures from the balls. By and large, volunteer members make their own costumes, at their own expense. Our next ball will be presented February 12, 2011 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Each year the Krewe sponsors a few charities. At the end of our fiscal year, these charities will be presented a check based on our fundraising efforts throughout the year. Our designated charities for 2010 - 2011 are The Colt 45s Aids Trouble Fund, Lesbian Health Initiative of Houston, and the Art League Houston Healing Art Program.
